One of the most important challenges of traveling by motorbike is fresh food. Of course you can always eat in restaurants but as a “hobby” cook I always try to cook most of the days. Temperatures and stores are the limited factors for cooking and also the destination (The Mediterranean countries are the most easy ones to find fresh food 😊). This is how we handle the cooking “challenge” during our trip.

 

As cooking gear we use the following :

Two Primus Omni-fuel stoves.

A foldable pan.

A Tefal cooking pot of about 2 liter.

 

Need to have spices : Olive oil, garlic, cumin and thyme powder, bay leaves, salt and pepper, and a big dose of creativity.

 

To tackle the issue of the temperature we found the following solution: buy frozen vegetables and meat in the morning and everything will be ready to cook when you arrive on the campsite. It keeps also your water reserve cold.

Following ingredients you can keep a couple of days also during high temperatures : potatoes (sweet and normal), carrots, canned fish (salmon, tuna, sardines), pasta and rice (the pre-cooked one of Uncle Bens), canned meat (Spam, chicken), canned beans, cucumber, avocado, onion, tomato. We use one of the top cases as a refrigerator, meaning we always have an Ortlieb water bag of 5liter filled with fresh and cool water and on top we put the fresh (or frozen) food.

One other thing we try to do, is to eat fresh fruit when we can (almost every day).

 

This is list of recipes we cook (all of them in one pot, not the steak of course 😊) :

 

  • Pasta, fresh tomato sauce (or canned), black olives and canned sardines (spicy or other).

  • Chorizo sausage and a blend of frozen vegetables (broccoli, carrot and cauliflower).

  • Canned beans and some smoked meat.

  • Frozen nasi and tuna.

  • Onion, yellow Paprika pepper, zucchini and fresh fish.

  • Fresh salmon, fresh broccoli (cooked), mushrooms and cream, wild rice.

  • Boiled sausage, potato, turnip and red onion.

  • Fresh shrimps, green Paprika pepper, tomato, shallot and rice.

  • Steak with frozen blend vegetables.

  • Canned chili bean sauce and sausage.

  • Potato, jalapeno peppers, onion, tomato and frozen chicken breast.

  • Roasted chicken and wild rice.

  • Stew of potato, onion and carrots with sausage or Spam. You need to add some bay leaves and thyme powder.

  • Ratatouille (red and yellow Paprika pepper, onion, zucchini and tomato pasta, spices) with fish or meat and rice.

  • Tortilla with fresh guacamole (two avocados, shallot, the juice of two limes, garlic powder and tomato) and canned Tuna or chicken.

  • Mixed of frozen seafood with pasta. (with or without sauce).

  • Tortilla with a salad (sliced cucumber, tomato and shallot. Black olives, olive oil and cumin powder). You can also add canned fish or some cheese.

  • Pasta with red pesto and canned fish (Tuna, Mackerel).

  • Roasted chicken, mushrooms and hash brown.

  • Steak, sweet potato, sour cream, and salad.

  • Frozen shrimps, soy sprouts and couscous with basil.

  • Stew of meat with red wine, shallot, mushrooms, turnip, bay leaves, thyme.
