Day 24

We ate the Twin Sisters for breakfast. They tasted very curvy and looked beautiful. The road became again more straight, however the desert remained extraordinary. Lots of winds into the Hills and we even saw a windfarm and this in Texas (the oil state)! The plan was to camp in the state park of Amistad, but was only a concrete RV site so we decided to hit some more miles until the Seminole Canyon State Park were we found a windy spot with a magnificent view on the canyon and desert. To put the cherry on the cake, we had a nice T-bone steak for dinner. Perfect food in the wild west!

In the meantime, we rode our first 5000kms towards the Big Bend National Park. We crossed the dessert landscape with accompanied by the wind. During a gas stop in Sanderson, we met a guy from Key West who was travelling with his BMW650GS direction Big Bend. It was an interesting guy who travelled already a lot and especially in South America. Afterwards we’ve talked with another guy from Austin, TX, but we’ve forgotten his name. He drove a BMW1200GS Rally and gave us some nice motorride tips for the Big Bend. He lived several years in Europe and was used to travel with his motorbike throughout the EU and further.

Once arrived at the entrance of the national park, all campsites were full so we headed for Stillwell Range campground. Amazing campsite, in the middle of nowhere in the desert! We spent the rest of the afternoon under our turp hiding for the sun (37°C). We didn’t meet any rattlesnakes, but we did see the whitetail deer and heard the laughing of the coyotes during the night. Fabulous!!

After one of our best nights we started riding into the Big Bend National Park. It’s a beautiful park with lots of roads (paved & unpaved) and canyons. We did a hike in the Boquillas Canyon. On the parking lot we met a very nice Australian couple who were already 11 months away from home (Pete & Takena). In the afternoon, we drove via the scenic road towards Castollon were we met…. a Norwegian guy who was also last year at the Norwegian GS meeting and he recognized Jaak from the accident. What a coincidence!! (https://www.facebook.com/BumblingNorwegian/) After a nice dirt road we spent the night at Chisos Basin.
