On Thursday morning the sun was back again, ideal to continue our journey and to enter back in the United States via Calais in the State of Maine. The turning of the leaves is starting, which made the drive very beautiful.
We drove along Pleasant Lake, Stockton Springs, Belfast! and ended in St George Lake Provincial Park. As it was a relaxing autumn day, we enjoyed a canoe trip on the lake.
On Friday was our first stop in Readfield at an apple u-pick orchard where we met John, the owner of the orchard. We had a nice chat with him and he gave us some advice on the things to see. Apart from the apples, we couldn’t resist the local baked good stuff. It was njammie! Reloaded with sugar we drove through New Hampshire and climbed the Mount Washington above the clouds 😊.
Although Mount Washington was not the highest mountain we did during the journey, the road was a nicely curved (which we like) and the view was breathtaking because it is the highest mountain in NH. Mount Washington is also known for the world record of windspeed and unpredictable weather, but this we luckily didn’t experience!
The day after we drove via the ‘White Mountain National Forest’ onto the ‘100 scenic byway’ in Vermont. Both have been recommended by several people we’ve met and we can only confirm the route is phenomenal. The forests with their autumn coloring leaves alternated by the cozy towns, made the 100 a very relaxing and enjoyable drive. It’s hard to explain this beauty of the nature.
The ‘scenic 100 byway’ stopped at the border with Massachusetts, in which we drove only for a limited amount of miles, because the next State was already there; New York State.
While we were taking a picture, Kurt stopped over with his GS100PD to have a brief what with us. It was a short, but nice meeting and he showed immediately the well-known hospitality.
We continued our way through the more rural and unknown New York, where we camped at the orange county campground. For some of you, orange county might ring a bell… we had the opportunity to meet with Paul Jr of Paul Jr Design in Montgomery. He has a new nice vintage shop with his custom bikes and he even showed us his working place. He really took the time to talk to us and show interest in our journey.
Today we’ve visited OCC of Paul Sr, whose place is much bigger, but also with much more merchandising stuff. This was really a commercial enterprise. He even didn’t take the time to say hello to the visitors. The rest of the day, we spent driving through New York, New Jersey and ended in Pennsylvania at the Blue Rock campground (why blue rock? Check out the pictures). Although the roads and scenery were beautiful, we realized that we are in a more populated part of the US.
