Day 94

Leaving the dinosaurs behind us, we continued the road viaHW40 towards Salt Lake City driving along a green and beautiful Utah (Strawberry reservoir & Wasatch Mountain State Park). In Salt Lake City we paid a visit at Kindig IT Design, which we know from their show on Discovery Channel. We were kindly surprised by the friendliness of Dave and Kevin. They took the time to have a brief chat and of course the photo shoot & signatures. It felt a bit weird to see & meet people in real life which only know from American TV series. In the afternoon, the plan was to drive to the Bonneville Salt Flats, but halfway in Delle, a heavy thunderstorm changed our plans. We were advised to return 30 miles to the nearest motel. Luckily we followed the advice. In the end we had a great night and enjoyed the hot tub and swimming pool whilst the storm was very active.

In the morning we had a perfect blue sky and ideal temperatures to head to the Bonneville Salt Flats. Thanks to the few inches of water of last night, we had a magnificent mirroring view of the mountains and ourselves in the salt flats, but the downside was, that it was impossible to drive on it with our motorbikes. First we entered Nevada via Wendover and some miles later we entered Idaho via Jackpot. Idaho is our sixteenth state and as welcome gift we received a nice thunderstorm with hail lightening, wind and rain. Despite the weather, the scenery was beautiful and we drove until Twin Falls were we could test our new tarp in the rain. Mission was successful!

In the morning, the sky was clear again and we took the opportunity to visit the Shoshone waterfalls. Again a positive side-effect of the rainfall, the river level was very high and the falls very impressive and loud. Idaho is a real farmer state, especially know for the potatoes, but we are convinced that the sprinklers are also invented in Idaho. Even in the rain the continues sprinkling 😊. We had completely forgotten we had planned a detour to another national monument. As soon as the scenery changed towards black lava fields, our penny dropped we wanted to visit the Craters of the Moon. This is really a ‘must do’ when you’re travelling through Idaho. It looks like the lava is still flowing into the landscape and the mix of the black lava fields in combination with the colorful spring flowers are spectacular. After enjoying an afternoon of wind (35mph), we relaxed in the hot springs of Lava Springs and to put a nice cherry on a very complete cake, we ended the evening with a nice campfire.
