Day 150

When we returned from the city town to enjoy the diner with Vanessa and Brian (campground owners) we were surprised to meet our friend Michael! We were happy to see him again and to spent another night together. Vanessa and Brian prepared the diner for the ‘young couple’ 😊, but we ended up to share all the food together with 6 other motorbike travelers (Michael, Jeff, Ruslan, Mr Island, Mr Seattle and Yun). The food was amazing; all local and fresh – halibut from Valdez, shrimps from Seldovia and as desert a cake and fresh peaches - and as always good evenings end up in a party with a lot of beers and whiskey. It was an unforgettable evening! On Monday we said goodbye to everyone and headed direction Canada. We drove along the Taylor Hwy and thanks to the sunny weather we were even able to see the McKinley/Denali mountain. We took the magnificent ‘top of the world highway’, which is it’s name worthy. The scenery was absolutely fabulous, it’s a pity you can’t reflect it on camera…. We stopped in Dawson city at a campsite next to the Yukon River. On Tuesday we visited shortly Dawson City and met our Dutch guy living for years in Canada, Dick, who got us in contact with Tony Beets (some of you will know him from Discovery Channel). We had a short chat with him and started the Bonanza Creek road. It’s a dirtroad loop along the creek where all goldminers dig for gold. We visited the Dredge n°4, an interesting visit with a lot of explanation on the gold rush and dredge itself. After a heavy dusty day, we stopped at the Kolondike River campground to relax and where by coincidence we met again our friend Dick. We must admit that we’ve never been woken up in our tent in such a nice way as on Wednesday morning. Dick woke us up at 7.30am and offered us a breakfast with eggs, bacon, toast and coffee, the perfect day to start a new day! We drove via the beautiful Klondike Hwy to Carmacks, thanks to a Swiss couple, Evi & Adi, whom we met during a stop along the road. They informed us about a nice campspot in the village. We agreed to meet up there again and spent the evening together with a few beers and nice exchange of experiences. Thursday was a sad day in our journey. We’ve received the news that David’s grandmother died. It’s hard knowing we were not able to say goodbye, but she also travelled a lot, so the best way to honor her is to continue travelling. She travels with us in our hearts and memories. We continued driving on the Klondike Hwy until we reached Whitehorse, where we met our dear friend Michael again. We had a cozy and nice evening together. On our way to the campground, we were lucky to see some local wildlife; a fox and hungry beaver 😊. Michael will leave today for a 15 days canoe trip and we are going into the direction of Skagway, hoping to see the salmon run.
